Motown 25: yesterday, Today, and Forever.

On March 25, 1983 Michael performed on Motown 25; Yesterday, Today, And Forever, Singing with his brothers and singing Billie Jean by himself. Here he debuted his signature dance move, THE MOONWALK. This performance was seen by 47 MILLION viewers during its intial airing and he drew comparisons to Elvis and the Beatles. New York Times Says, "The moonwalk that he made famous is an apt metaphor for his dance style. How does he do it? As a technician he is a great illusionist, a genuine mime. His ability to keep one leg straight as he glides while the other bends seems to walk requires PERFECT TIMING."

THRILLER

November 30, 1982. Epic released a heck of an album. but you probably know that already-its thriller time!
Michael had intended to make a album where every song was a killer song. Thriller was in the Top 10 of the billboard 200 for EIGHTY CONSECUTIVE WEEKS! Seven singles that made it this way: Billie Jean, Beat it, Wanna be startin somethin, The girl is mine, Human nature, PYT, and of course, THRILLER.
People simply ate up Thriller! It sold 140 MILLION COPIES making itself the best selling album of all time. J. Randy Taraborrelli mused, "at some point thriller stopped selling like a leisure item and started selling like a household staple."
Before Thriller, Michael, and many other African musicians, struggled to get on MTV because of their race. CBS president Walter Yetnikoff pressured MTV and declared, "I'm not going to give you any more videos and I'm going to go public and tell them that you don't want to play music by a Black Man." That made MTV start showing Billie Jean and Beat it which opened doors for people like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Usher.
Thriller was an extraordinary time for Michael. They started making merchandise such as T-shirts, dolls, clothes, hats, bags, and other things. In 2003, Thriller was ranked at number 20 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of all time list.
And Thriller sold like crazy. But then stopped. So Michael had to get it selling again....

Off the wall ♥

At the mid-life of the Jackson Five in 1971 Motown decided that Michael should go solo but stay with the J5 also. His first single was "Got to be there" and it was a Top 5 hit. He also sang the opening song for the movie Ben. Other successful singles were "rockin robin" and "I wanna be where you are". During 1972 J5 left Motown, due to the financial crisis they were in, and went to Epic records. Michael continued in the band and his solo career. In 1978 Michael stared as the Scarecrow in the movie musical The Wiz which was the funked up version of the Wizard of Oz. Many Years later, Michael says "The wiz was my greatest experience so far, and I will never forget that."
The music in the movie was arranged by Quincy Jones. When Michael was at this age, he was a VERY sensitive and shy person. He called Quincy one day and said "I'm interested in doing an album. Could you recommend anyone who would be interested in producing it with me or working with me?" And Quincy replied "Why don't you let ME do it?" And after that Michael said to himself, "I don't know why i didn't think of that." But later he says that he was probably thinking that Quincy Jones was his father. Then Michael said to Quincy, "WOW that would be great." And Michael says later, "Whats great about Quincy is that he doesn't hover, he lets you do your thing."
And that was off the wall.
